Hangovers suck! No surprises there. Those of you familiar with Intox-Detox know that one of the best ways to avoid the big H is to preemptively take a product like ours that both protects the liver and helps avoid the misery of the morning after. But, some people don't like to take pills. So how do we make taking Intox-Detox effortless and a little more fun?
I'll tell you how: We put the goods right into our cocktails.
Andy Bennett here, Intox-Detox CEO/Founder and I'm not here to talk (or write) your ear off. I like posting personally on our blog because I'm a real dude. I enjoy drinking a few cocktails and when I discover something cool, I just have to share. So lately I've been behind the bar mixing up a couple cocktails with our Intox-Detox formula right in the drink itself. And, BONUS, they actually taste OUTSTANDING.
Quick review, when you have some drinks it's always better to stick to the lighter colored liquors like vodka, white rum or gin. They have fewer congeners, one of the worst of which is a chemical called methanol. To put it simply, methanol competes in your liver with the other toxins from alcohol, so you run out of the crucial detoxifying enzymes faster. Translation: accumulating more toxins faster, which leads to feeling more hangover symptoms.
So the solution is to only drink clear or light liquors, right? Wrong!
Life is short and I love drinking bourbon. When approaching dark liquors, buy quality products, take your Intox-Detox, pay more attention to MODERATION and avoid excess sugars.
All of my favorite cocktails do exactly this. I avoid excess sugars by making sugar-free simple syrup for my drinks. Enough babbling...
Now I'm going to give you two awesome drink recipes that are low-sugar, low-calorie, absolutely delicious and infused with Intox-Detox to DETOX, RECOVER and PROTECT.
First off, for my fellow whiskey lovers...
B'Old Fashioned
What you need
- 3 - 4.5 oz Bulleit Bourbon or Rye
- 1 oz Truvia Simple Syrup (recipe below)
- 5 - 6 dashes Angostura Bitters
- 1 Orange or Tangerine
- 1 Frozen Black Cherry
- 1 Capsule of Intox-Detox
How to do it
Make your Truvia simple syrup with a Keurig (see below); if you don't have one you can just as easily mix 1 oz of warm or hot water with 1 - 2 packs of Truvia. Open 1 capsule of Intox-Detox and dump the contents in to your glass. Add the sugar-free simple syrup, 5 - 6 (or more) dashes of Angostura Bitters. Rip off a little bit of orange or tangerine peel and hold it over the glass. "Crack" or rip it, making sure some of the orange oil zest gets into the glass. You can also just dump it right into the glass, which is what I do. Add the whiskey and stir thoroughly with a spoon. Remove the orange peel, if you left it in. Garnish with a frozen black cherry. I like these because they help chill the drink and are far healthier than the maraschinos that soak in sugar water (which is often made of high-fructose corn syrup - yuck!). Pack the glass with ice. Stir thoroughly or toss in a shaker a few times to mix and chill.
Sit back and enjoy one of the finest sugar-free cocktails you will ever drink, with the piece of mind that you are protecting your liver and less likely to wake up feeling awful. What I love about this drink is that over the 4 or 5 B'Old Fashioneds that I might consume, I am getting my full dose of Intox-Detox. You can stop adding the capsules at number 4, completing the full serving from a single serving of ID. Or continue to add it, since it is very dose dependent. Just don't forget about the moderation. As magical as our ingredients are, no amount of Traditional Chinese Medicine or liver detox science can make up for stupidity.
So, not everyone loves whiskey. Here's a lower-sugar Cosmopolitan, laced with ID, antioxidants and a taste that will blow your mind, without blowing out your liver!
Cosmic Cosmo
What you need
- 3 oz Titos Handmade Vodka or Ketel One Citroen Vodka
- 2 oz Truvia Simple Syrup
- 1.5 oz Lime Juice
- 0.5 oz Just Cranberry Juice (RW Knudsen)
- 0.5 oz Pomegranate Juice
- 0.5 oz Just Black Cherry Juice
- 2 -3 Dashes Angostura Bitters
- 1 Capsule Intox-Detox
- 1 Lime Wedge
- 1 Frozen Black Cherry
How to do it
Best practice is that all juices should be "Not from concentrate" or fresh, if possible. Combine all ingredients in a shaker. Often I will "crack" some orange or tangerine peel into the shaker as well, sometimes just adding it to the mix, since this drink is strained. Shake thoroughly for 45 to 60 seconds. Strain into a martini cocktail glass with a lime wedge and a frozen black cherry to garnish.
WARNING: If you make this drink at a party, you will be stuck behind the bar all night. It's best to keep it a secret. Truthfully, this is one of the most delicious drinks ever. And it's "dangerous" in the sense that you can easily overdo it, so be careful!
How to Make Truvia Simple Syrup
I used to cook it up on the stove in large batches so that I could make sugar-free cocktails without the granular "sugar deposits" you get when you add Truvia packs to your drinks. However, out of necessity one night, we started using our Keurig to make the simple syrups. It's actually super easy to do. Add 2 packs of Truvia per ounce of syrup to be made. Put a large coffee cup or measuring cup in place, make sure no Keurig pods are in the chamber and select how much you wish to make: 4, 6, 8, 10 or 12 ounces. Hit the brew button. Stir with a spoon until dissolved. The hot water will liquefy the Truvia, so that all your cocktails come out clean, sugar-free and delicious. Note: Most "sweet" cocktails like margaritas, gimlets, lemon drops etc require the equivalent of 3 to 4 packs of Truvia.
