I want to share a few tips about what alcoholic drinks to choose to increase your chances of waking up without feeling like the Walking Dead.

First though, you might have been thinking to yourself that some kinds of alcohol contain nasty things that cause hangovers, such as sulfites in wine, sugars, congeners etc.

(Most people repeat this information ad infinitum without really understanding what any of it really means – more on that coming)

What do all alcoholic beverages have in common?

ACETALDEHYDE.

That’s right, whether you drink wine, beer, liquor, mead or anything alcoholic – it all goes to your liver and produces Acetaldehyde. It’s just the way we are built. There’s no avoiding it.

The faster you break it down, the better you will feel tomorrow. End of story.

So, here’s some tips for choosing drinks that poison you less…

5 Tips for Drink Choice

  1. Light over dark

This is one thing you have read that is actually true. Dark spirits like rum and whiskey contain congeners like methanol. It’s another highly toxic chemical that overloads your liver. Like a traffic jam. Red wine can also fall into this category. Choose vodka, gin or light colored drinks for fewer toxins.

  1. Drink order

Remember “Liquor before beer, you’re in the clear?” It’s another common myth that is actually TRUE. It’s because carbonated beverages such as champagne (my kryptonite) and beer speed up intoxication. Follow them with hard liquor and you get drunk faster and back up your poor liver. (I don’t even always follow this advice. Sometimes you can get away with it, especially if your liver has some help from the miracle Super Food Japanese Raisin)

  1. Mixing or Binging

No matter what order the drinks, mixing too much or just drinking too much in general will get you hungover. Maybe you have kids (like I do) and it’s exciting to get out, so you overdo it a little. That’s your fault. Be a grown up already. Stick to one or two types of drinks per night only. Never binge drink. It’s not even fun. We're not in college anymore. (Maybe you still are, but it wasn't even fun then, so don't!) Also, have a snack every 3 drinks or so to slow you down.

  1. Kryptonite

It’s the only thing that can hurt Super Man. Whether you are a superhero or not, we all have a kryptonite. Mine is champagne. No matter what I do, within minutes of drinking more than just a glass, I usually have a pounding headache. Would you feel bad for Super Man if he died drinking liquid kryptonite? No. So, don’t feel sorry for yourself if you do the same!

Follow these simple tips and you will already be WAY ahead of 90% of people.

Now you actually understand what causes hangovers and you can model your hydration, diet and drink choice to avoid them. (Click here to read the previous articles on Hydration and Diet to avoid hangovers)
