The Intox-Detox team loves alcohol drinks in all shapes, sizes and colors. We like beer, wine, liquor, moon shine and every possible combination thereof. What we do not tolerate is hangovers!

One thing you should know about hangovers – SUGARS make them worse. Why is this? Well, I don’t know if you’ve heard by now but sugar is not great for your body in a lot of ways. Unfortunately, very few bars are keeping up with the incredible selection of sugar-free options on the market. For example, Zevia sodas come in a wide variety of rainbow colors and flavors; they are naturally sweetened with stevia, erythritol and monk fruit extract. So, here’s how you make the drink naturally and with a lot less sugar:

Ingredients:

Jack Daniels

Angostura Orange bitters or orange oil extract

Lemon juice (or sugar-free Sweet & Sour Mix)

Zevia Lemon-Lime

Lemon

Cherry

Follow the video above for the most part. We like to use Angostura Orange Bitters rather than Triple Sec, a liquor that is loaded with sugar. Alternatively, you can use 1/8th tsp of orange oil extract from the spice section of the grocery store. We also like a little more JD (or whiskey of choice) in our drink, so we would just make up the difference with an extra half shot of that. Rather than sugary Sweet & Sour mix, we like to add 1/4 to a 1/2 oz of all-natural lemon juice (not from concentrate). After all this is supposed to be “lemonade”. We like it sour, but adjust for your taste. You can add a pack of Truvia to make it more sweet or just decrease the amount of lemon juice. You can also just grab one of the sugar-free Sweet & Sour products typically sold at grocery and liquor stores. Finish up by topping the drink off with Zevia Lemon-Lime instead of Sprite or 7-up. Garnish with a lemon or lime wedge and cherry.

Using these alternatives will save you anywhere from 20 to 30 grams of sugar per drink. Then you can save those calories for something else. Like cake! Don’t turn down the sweets and then order hundreds of extra sugar calories at the bar!

Also, less sugar means less inflammation and hopefully avoiding a nasty hangover.
