How to Make Wine Slushies the Intox-Detox Way!
It’s summertime! Time to make wine slushies!
Sacrilegious you say? Not at all. First of all, it’s been scientifically proven that people who drink dry wine in the sunshine are certifiably insane! Second, you must have a few middling bottles sitting around from dinner party guests who made the gesture (guesture?) of buying you wine, but made no effort to find out what you like or spend a little money to make sure it wasn’t total crap.
Also, wine slushies are just downright fun. Since Intox-Detox was born in Florida, we know all about drinking in the sunshine. Our summer temperatures get a little extreme. Factor in the humidity between June and September and a single sip of even the best Pinot Noir will shrivel you up like a raisin and dehydrate the hell out of you in mere seconds.
We first tried the wine slushy thing out at the Endless Summer Winery, a local spot in Fort Pierce, FL. There aren’t many wine grapes that you can successfully grow in Florida, but we were impressed with this winery nonetheless. They have a very cool back story and you must check them out if you visit Southern Florida. They have a really cool “swirl” slushy with both red and white wine in it!
So, where do you start when the whim hits to blend up some wine slushies? We googled it. Unfortunately, so many of the recipes call for freezing things ahead of time and even adding a bunch of sugar. We didn’t have time to freeze the wine ahead of time. We wanted to get our slushy on now! Luckily, we buy frozen fruit on the regular. It’s usually frozen at peak ripeness and doesn’t ever go bad. Fruit hack!
Like so many other things, Intox-Detox had to create our own way. It’s what we do, and how we created such an amazing alcohol recovery product in the first place. We like to break the mold.
Without further pageantry or ado, here’s a quick recipe you can throw together that’s low in added sugar and relatively low maintenance.
Intox-Detox Wine Slushy Recipe
-8 oz Wine
-2 packs of Truvia
-1/2 cup Frozen Fruit
Add 6 to 8 oz of wine to a blender. Dump in 1/2 to 1 cup frozen fruit, without added sugars. We like frozen cherries, strawberries and blueberries with dry red wines, our favorite of which is Pinot Noir. For white wine, you might even go a little tropical with fruits like papaya, mango, pineapple, etc… Add 2 packs of Truvia calorie-free and all-natural sweetener. If you are using sweet wine, you might reduce this to one pack or even none at all. Add 3 or 4 ice cubes and blend until smooth and slushy. This recipe makes one serving, so you might want to double or triple among friends. Grab a straw and go to town!
