Obviously, Cinco de Mayo is about a lot more than getting hammered on tequila shots, margaritas and Corona. However, much like St. Patrick’s Day, this Mexican holiday has typically become a drunken free-for-all for many Americans. Sure, anyone can drink a whole pot of coffee and swallow aspirin by the fistful. But the best thing you can do is preempt the misery by addressing the root cause of the problem, rather than trying to cover it up after the damage is done. First, what is the root cause of the problem? Dehydration, right? No! No! No! As we’ve preached many times before, dehydration is only one of many physiological responses in the body when consuming alcohol. Some are well understood; others not so much. BONUS TIP: Dehydration is easy to fix. Drink water. Lots of it. You don’t need a fancy or expensive solution. Though electrolytes will help; I recommend coconut water.
One of the biggest causes is a nasty chemical called ACETALDEHYDE, which our liver makes naturally when we consume alcohol. It’s a really nasty chemical in the -aldehyde family. Kind of like formaldehyde. Long story short, you don’t want this stuff in your body until you’re dead.
Acetaldehyde is said to be as much as 15 to 30 times more poisonous than alcohol itself. What are the side effects of large amounts of acetaldehyde in the body? Nausea, dizziness, headache and vomiting. Sound familiar? Well, it should because these are some of the nastiest symptoms of a hangover.
