Thirsty Thursday: The Intox-Detox Mojito

mojito sugar-free

It’s thirsty Thursday again and we’ve been on a rum kick. Last week it was re-imagining the classic New Orleans cocktail THE HURRICANE (see recipe here). We cut the sugars by one-fourth (even gave a sugar-free option, aside from the rum that is) and cut the calories by half. And all without losing any of the flavor. We even added some healthy antioxidants like pomegranate, acai and the coffee fruit extract in the excellent Bai 5 Bubbles drinks. Of course, we also taught you how to make a “Bermuda Triangle Hurricane” by floating some 151 on top. Deadly, but delicious…you’ll definitely want to pick up some Intox-Detox here… (save 35% with code “hangoverssuck35”)

This week it’s sugar-free Mojitos for a taste of that Miama-Cuban vice. Crisp, minty, refreshing and without all the extra sugar to make your hangover awful. It’s also diet-friendly, so you won’t be working off a few drinks this weekend for weeks to come.

Sugar-Free Mojitos Intox-Detox Style

Bai 5 bubbles lemon

  • 1 to 1 1/2 oz Cruzan light rum
  • 1/2 Lime juice (fresh-squeezed or not from concentrate)
  • Zevia Lemon-Lime or Bai 5 Bubbles Sulawesi Limon
  • La Croix Lime
  • 8 to 10 mint leaves
  • 3 lime wedges
  • 2 packs Truvia

Muddle 2 lime wedges with the mint leaves for a minute or two. Add 2  packs of Truvia and lime juice and muddle a little more. Pour one splash of Zevia or Bai 5 Bubbles until it sizzles to bring out the flavors. Add ice to the top of a tall glass and pour in rum. Fill with half and half La Croix Lime and the Zevia or Bai to the top. Stir or toss lightly in shaker cup. Garnish with remaining lime wedge and a sprig of mint leaves. Enjoy in the sunshine with a few friends, preferably near a beach!

*Increase or decrease rum and lime to taste. Some like their drinks fresher or stronger than others.

*Create new fruit variations with other Zevia or Bai flavors like black cherry, strawberry, grapefruit or orange.

When it comes to amazing yet simple classic crafted cocktails, you can’t beat this virtually sugar-free mojito!

Don’t forget to take your Intox-Detox! It’s way easy to have a couple more of these than you expected!

Thirsty Thursday: The Intox-Detox Hurricane

WARNING: This drink will make you AWESOME in ways that you may not be prepared for. Tread carefully with the 151 (aka AB’s SRU knockout punch)…

Thirsty Thursday: The Intox-Detox Hurricane

It’s Thirsty Thirsty and we are back with another Intox-Detox spin on a classic cocktail. You see, here at Intox-Detox we know that artificial sweeteners, colors and sugars can make your hangover worse. While there is no true 100% hangover cure, (although we have a pretty bad ass product) the cumulative effect of doing a handful of things right can leave you feeling much better than you should the morning after a few drinks.

Last time we shared 5 Diet-Friendly cocktails, so check that out here… Today we are remaking the New Orleans classic with a couple of fresh, all-natural and lower-calorie/sugar twists…

The Hurricane Intox-Detox Style

pomegranate juice for antioxidants

1 oz Cruzan Light rum

1 oz Dark rum (we like Goslings Black Rum for a kick!)

1/2 oz Lime juice

1 oz Fresh-squeezed orange juice* (or Trop 50)

2 oz Bai Bubbles Jamaican Blood Orange

1 oz Vitamin Shoppe Acai juice

2 oz Zevia Strawberry (or any Bai beverage)

1/2 oz POM pomegranate juice

2-3 packs Truvia

Orange wedge and cherry garnish

*CEO Plan – Float 1 shot of Bacardi 151 and a 1/2 shot of Tillman Bada Bing Cherry Juice (BEWARE!) This variant actually officially makes it a “Bermuda Triangle Hurricane” – beware!

*Both Cruzan and Black Seal rums come highly recommended from

*Use different Bai and Zevia flavors to tweak  and create different kinds of hurricanes!

Nutrient Facts:

Carbohydrates – 8

Sugars – 7 (entirely from juice)

Calories – 157

Compare that to the 32 grams of sugar and 339 calories you get from your normal hurricane. No wonder they got that name!  Not only did we more than cut the calories in half, we cut the sugar by a fourth (using only sugars from fresh juices) and loaded the drink with the antioxidants that help your body fight the damaging free radicals from alcohol. And, you’re welcome! The only way it could get any better is if you take Intox-Detox before your first drink. Also, consider this option…

No and Very Low-Calorie and Sugar Options

For a lower-sugar version, simply replace all juices with Zevia flavors. For example, use Zevia Orange, Strawberry. Black Cherry or any of the rainbow of delicious flavors they offer. You can also use any of the Bai or Bai Bubbles drinks, which contain only 1 gram of sugar per drink. Replace the juice in the drink with these low and no-calorie options and then simply squeeze a wedge of fresh orange on top. Ask any bartender; fresh makes the best drinks.

This option makes the drink only 125 calories and far better for those looking to avoid all sugars.

Pour rum, lime and acai juice into a shaker. As for the orange juice, it’s best to squeeze it yourself. You don’t need a juicer (it would helps) or press. Do it the old school way and squeeze half an orange over your open palm with the fingers spread slightly and a bowl underneath. This way you can catch some of the pulp and seeds. You can always strain the final product if needed. We like pulp because it’s full of vitamin C and antioxidants; and when it comes to drinks fresher is always better. Optional: research “flavor packs” in the orange juice industry and you might invest in that juicer. In a pinch, you can use Trop 50 orange juice.

The last 3 ingredients create a grenadine substitute and there are many recipes out there that take forever. But I want my drink now! So combine the Zevia strawberry and POM in a coffee mug and heat for 15 to 20 seconds. Then stir in the Truvia until dissolved. Add the whole mix to the shaker with plenty of ice. Shaking the living hell out of the powder cold also works too! That’s my preferred method, rather than heating the liquids. Shake and strain into a large Hurricane glass filled with fresh ice. Garnish with orange and cherry.

Enjoy with friends, preferably near a beach! Don’t forget to take your Intox-Detox!

(Give me my free Intox-Detox Sample!)

Okay, we’ll repeat ourselves. We’ve said it so many times before, but chances are you’ve never visited the Intox-Detox blog, so welcome!

Here we try to educate people about how to protect their livers and avoid hangovers. By avoiding drinking? Hell no!

The point is to drink moderately and enjoy yourself while protecting your body and avoiding the MISERY of tomorrow. One of the best ways to do that is to avoid refined sugars, which are highly inflammatory and make your hangovers that much worse. Not to mention that a few summer cocktails can add up in terms of calories quicker than you think.

We’ll tell you more about other strategies for avoiding hangovers in a second, but first let’s get straight to the recipe…

Skip it and go straight to the FREE SAMPLE of Intox-Detox here…

Strawberry Collins Sugar-Free

4-5 Ripe Strawberries

2 oz Gin

1 1/2 Limes juiced

Zevia Strawberry soda

Few dashes Angosturra Orange Bitters

Muddle the berries, lime juice and bitters in a pint glass or Mason jar. Add a little Zevia Strawberry until it fizzes and muddle a little more to really bring out the sugars and oils.  Add ice and all remaining ingredients.

(See original non-sugar-free recipe here…)

Don’t know about Zevia sodas yet? You are totally missing out! It’s everything soda always should have been: 0 calorie, sugar-free, all-natural and delicious in cocktails. They even went totally clear to eliminate all dyes and artificial colors. You can give this stuff to your kid without worrying about a Mountain Dew temper tantrum that might scar both you and your child for life. Learn more about Zevia here… BONUS: Zevia also comes in a rainbow cornucopia of flavors, with something for everyone.

While you’re learning stuff, ever heard of Intox-Detox?

Our product is HANDS DOWN the best ALCOHOL DETOX & RECOVERY FORMULA on the market. It contains the ONLY 2 clinically proven ingredients (from human studies) that BOTH protect the liver and help avoid THE MISERY of the next morning when taken with alcohol. Best of all, it really works.

Guilt-Free Skinny Margaritas for Summertime – Pairs Well with Intox-Detox!

Perfecting the Art of the Skinny Margarita

Who doesn’t love a good margarita in the summertime? And yet, most of the ones you get at the bar have enough sugar to put you in a diabetic coma after only a few drinks. Why waste the calories when there’s a better way?

Anyone else severely disappointed by the “skinny margarita” option? Whether it comes out of a “skinny bitch” bottle or it’s just over-hyped agave nectar (most of which is neither natural, agave or low-glycemic) or just watered down margarita – my most common experience – yes, even at “good” tequila bars. There has to be a better way!

There are so many recipes out there, but this is one of the best ones that we at Intox-Detox have ever found. And depending on your devotion to being truly sugar-free, you can go a couple of different ways, but don’t worry we’ve got you covered. Below are all the details you need to adapt this recipe EXACTLY to your tastes and preferences.

I promise that I thoroughly tested this recipe to make sure that it was solid. I take this VERY SERIOUSLY. It’s my full-time job! It took a little adjusting, but this was the result we came up with….

Here at Intox-Detox, we like to keep the sugar to an absolute minimum. It’s not ENTIRELY for vanity. It’s no secret that refined sugar is terrible for you. However, because it causes an inflammatory response in the body, plain old WHITE SUGAR can make your hangovers worse too. Not to mention that a high-refined sugar diet is WORSE for your liver than drinking moderately, according to the latest research.

And sugar doesn’t just make your cells inflamed, it tends to do the same around your waist!

We’ll save our sugar intake for fun treats like the occasional cookie or piece of birthday cake. Here’s what you need to pick up to perfect this recipe:

  • Kosher or coarse Sea Salt
  • 1 3/4 – 2 ounces Espolon silver tequila
  • 1 ounce fresh lime juice
  • 1 ounce Trop 50 orange juice or fresh-squeezed
  • 2 tablespoons Madhava Agave Five or 1-2 tablespoons Truvia simple syrup (see additional recipe below)
  • 1 lime wedge for garnish

Fill a cocktail shaker with ice and all ingredients. Apply the lid and shake for 30 to 45 seconds. Strain or poor into your chosen glass (pre-rimmed with salt if you choose).

  1. Tequila – We absolutely love Espolon; I’d go so far as to say that it’s better than Patron and at a fraction of the (usually about $23-25 for 750 ml) cost. Whatever tequila you choose, just make sure that it’s 100% Agave. You might prefer reposado or anejo, but quality isn’t all about price. And bad tequila will require more packs of Intox-Detox!
  2. Sweetener – Some people don’t dig the so-called “after taste” of Truvia. In that case, you can opt for fresh-squeezed OJ, rather than Trop 50 and use the agave nectar. That will add a little more sugar and calories, but what good is a calorie-free drink that you don’t enjoy? In the past, we have gotten lazy and opted for the Master of Mixes Lite, which is virtually sugar-free, but not nearly as good as either of these fresher options. If you go that route, you won’t need fresh juices or sweeteners and you should mix at a 1:2 or 1:3 ratio, tequila to margarita mix.
  3. Truvia Simple Syrup – We typically follow the wisdom of Zevia. If you don’t know about them, please check them out. They make sugar-free sodas in a rainbow of flavors, which are all incredible for making low-calorie cocktails. These are soft drinks that you can enjoy or even serve to your children with a clear conscience. Recently they have removed the artificial colors from their soda products. Zevia blends erythritol (natural fruit sugar alcohol found in grapes), stevia and monk fruit extract, which is a great sugar-free blend to mimic the taste of sugar. To make the simple syrup combine 1/2 cup warm/hot water with 3 1/2 tablespoons of Truvia spoonable sweetener. If you only have the Truvia packs, you need 12 of them for this recipe. Shake or stir until all the granules have dissolved. However, we recommend using 6 packs of Monk fruit extract and 6 packs of Truvia. You might also look into Truvia’s new Nectar product, which blends honey and stevia.  We found that it doesn’t mix easily and tends to aggregate at the bottom of the shaker, but the taste is very nice. It’s not completely sugar-free and you might use half of above recommendation because it is VERY SWEET.
  4. Madhava Agave Five – This sweetener surprised us. It’s also not sugar-free, but pretty low calorie. It’s agave nectar that has monk fruit and stevia added to cut the calories. And it mixes beautifully. While it adds a few extra calories, this was our favorite sweetener from the “experiment”.
  5. To Taste… – It’s hard to say exactly what you will like. Personally, I like a strong drink where I can taste the tequila. If you don’t, you might cut this back to 1 and 1/2 ounces of tequila. I also like a “fresh” drink. Exactly what that means is hard to define and probably depends a lot upon your taste buds. I don’t mind something a little sour and I absolutely hate the hyper-sweet concoctions that pass for margaritas at most places. So you can tweak this too. Try different sweeteners, as suggested, or add an extra 1/2 ounce if needed. Or cut it if you find it too sweet. This recipe is a great starting place with ingredients that both taste good and spare the sugars and calories. Not to mention that natural compounds in fresh orange and lime, erythritol, REAL agave nectar and monk fruit contain potent antioxidants, vitamins and minerals that may also help avoid the hangover.

Want to Make a Whole Pitcher for the Party?

To make about 6 – 8-oz drinks or approximately 45 ounces, use the following:

  • 2 and 1/2 cups of tequila
  • 1 cup fresh lime juice (15 limes worth)
  • 1 and 1/4 cup fresh-squeezed OJ (5 medium oranges) or Trop 50
  • 6 tablespoons of Madhava Agave Five OR Truvia simple syrup

Summertime Drink Recipe

Here at Intox-Detox we love sharing great drink recipes, to be enjoyed of course moderately with a serving or two of Intox-Detox. Down in Florida where we are based, it’s getting mighty hot this time of year as summer fast approaches. A refreshing drink to enjoy on the beach is always a welcome addition. This Blackberry Whiskey Lemonade is delicious!

Props to for posting this awesome recipe, but we like to do things the Intox-Detox way. We think we have improved on it just a little bit. Here’s a link to the original article if you want to check it out…

We hate hangovers; and guzzling the white demon known as sugar can make your hangovers worse. Why is this? Sugar is highly inflammatory. The toxins from the alcohol are already causing cellular inflammation in the body. Any additional inflammatory substances will only make it worse. Not to mention, that the calories can really add up when you drink sugary beverages all day long. To learn more about how cellular inflammation contributes to hangovers and what you can do about it naturally, click here…

For this drink, we avoid the sugars by sweetening with Zevia sugar and calorie-free, all-natural sodas. See recipe below. Checkout their website and Facebook page to learn more about how they are changing soda into what it always should have been – a healthy refreshing beverage.

The good news is that this recipe contains blackberries, lemon juice and mint, all of which contain antioxidants that might help with inflammation. Let’s take a look…

  • 12 blackberries
  • 4 mint leaves
  • 3 oz. Irish Whiskey
  • 3 oz. lemon juice
  • Zevia Strawberry, Black Cherry or Lemon-Lime Twist

Muddle the blackberries and mint (also Truvia simple syrup if you go that route) in a cocktail shaker until well combined.

Pour a splash of Zevia soda on top until it fizzes to bring out the flavors. If you don’t have Zevia, you can make simple syrup with Truvia and water. (Bring water to a boil and stir in Truvia until dissolved – 1/2 cup water to 3 1/2 Tablespoons Truvia. Then chill prior to use)

Add the Irish Whiskey and lemon juice to the shaker and fill it with ice.

Shake well to combine all ingredients and strain over two tall ice filled glasses.

Top off with Zevia soda and garnish with mint, blackberry and lemon slice. Check out all of the Zevia flavors and pick one or mix them for an even more unique lemonade drink.

Sugar Sucks and So Do Hangovers! Reviewing Lynchburg Lemonade Recipe

Check out the Tipsy Bartender’s recipe for Lynchburg Lemonade. After you watch the video, read on below to learn how to make this drink even better and avoid a hangover if you have a few more drinks than expected.

Click here to skip ahead and get a free sample of our amazing hangover-busting product…

The Intox-Detox team loves alcohol drinks in all shapes, sizes and colors. We like beer, wine, liquor, moon shine and every possible combination thereof. What we do not tolerate is hangovers!

One thing you should know about hangovers – SUGARS make them worse. Why is this? Well, I don’t know if you’ve heard by now but sugar is not great for your body in a lot of ways. Regarding hangovers, sugar is highly inflammatory to the body. We just posted a blog explaining the connection between cellular inflammation and hangovers – click here to read it now.

Unfortunately, very few bars are keeping up with the incredible selection of sugar-free options on the market. For example, Zevia sodas come in a wide variety of rainbow colors and flavors; they are naturally sweetened with stevia, erythritol and monk fruit extract. In our humble opinion they have one of the best sugar-free flavor systems going today. Naturally these products lend themselves to making great sugar-free or lower-sugar cocktails. It’s a crime that every bar in America doesn’t offer their products as an alternative.

Problem is there are two massive companies that have a stranglehold on the industry. What? Big corporations pushing unhealthy sugar and chemicals on the American population with their big money monopolistic predatory influence. Weird. Not in America!

Grab a free sample of Intox-Detox here…

So, here’s how you make the drink naturally and with a lot less sugar:

Jack Daniels

Angostura Orange bitters or orange oil extract

Lemon juice (or sugar-free Sweet & Sour Mix)

Zevia Lemon-Lime

Follow the video above for the most part. We like to use Angostura Orange Bitters rather than Triple Sec, a liquor that is loaded with sugar. Alternatively, you can use 1/8th tsp of orange oil extract from the spice section of the grocery store. We also like a little more JD (or whiskey of choice) in our drink, so we would just make up the difference with an extra half shot of that. Rather than sugary Sweet & Sour mix, we like to add 1/4 to a 1/2 oz of all-natural lemon juice (not from concentrate). After all this is supposed to be “lemonade”. We like it sour, but adjust for your taste. You can add a pack of Truvia to make it more sweet or just decrease the amount of lemon juice. You can also just grab one of the sugar-free Sweet & Sour products typically sold at grocery and liquor stores. Finish up by topping the drink off with Zevia Lemon-Lime instead of Sprite or 7-up. Garnish with a lemon or lime wedge and cherry.

Using these alternatives will save you anywhere from 20 to 30 grams of sugar per drink. Then you can save those calories for something else. Like cake! Don’t turn down the sweets and then order hundreds of extra sugar calories at the bar!

Also, less sugar means less inflammation and hopefully avoiding a nasty hangover.

Add Intox-Detox to supercharge your liver’s ability to break down alcohol’s nastiest toxin (ACETALDEHYDE), so you can have your cake and eat it too!
